Why "Band 1" Doesn't Always Mean "Best Fit"

"Band 1."

For many lawyers, those two words carry significant weight.

Understandably so.

Rankings such as Chambers and Legal 500 provide a useful benchmark for assessing a firm's market reputation, quality of work, client recognition and standing within a particular practice area. For lawyers exploring new opportunities, they are often one of the first reference points.

But after speaking with lawyers across the market on a daily basis, I've found that the factors determining whether someone thrives within a team often sit well beyond any ranking table.

The conversations that lead to successful long-term moves rarely focus exclusively on where a team sits in Chambers. Instead, they tend to centre around questions such as:

  • How strong is the training and mentorship?
  • Are partners genuinely accessible?
  • Will associates receive meaningful responsibility early on?
  • What is the culture like within the team?
  • Do people actually stay?

These are factors that rarely appear in a directory ranking, yet they can have a profound impact on a lawyer's day-to-day experience and long-term career development.

A highly ranked practice may offer exceptional work and market-leading clients. Equally, a lower-ranked team may provide stronger mentorship, greater responsibility and a clearer pathway for progression. The reality is that neither scenario is unusual.

This is not to suggest that rankings are unimportant. They remain a valuable indicator of market perception and often reflect the quality of work being undertaken by a team.

However, rankings only tell part of the story.

One of the advantages of spending every day speaking with lawyers across the market is gaining a perspective that extends well beyond job descriptions. Over time, patterns emerge around leadership styles, team dynamics, retention rates, promotion prospects and the overall experience lawyers have within particular practices.

These are often the insights that prove most valuable when assessing whether a move is the right one. Rankings tell part of the story. The day-to-day reality tells the rest.

Thinking About Your Next Move?

Rankings are useful, but they rarely tell the full story. Sonder can help you understand how different teams compare in practice, from culture and mentorship to progression, responsibility and long-term fit.
