Am I Too Junior to Lateral?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from associates early in their careers: “Am I too junior to make a move?” The short answer is that it depends on why you’re looking.
The Case for Staying Put
In many cases, the right move is to stay where you are, at least for now.
The early years are where you build your foundation. Technical skills, deal experience, and judgment all take time to develop. Moving too quickly can sometimes limit the depth of that experience and leave gaps that are harder to fix later.
There’s real value in staying long enough to build credible, well-rounded experience.
When an Early Move Makes Sense
That said, there are situations where moving earlier can be the right call, and even accelerate your trajectory.
We typically see this where:
- Deal exposure is limited or non-existent
- Workflow is inconsistent or too narrow
- The platform doesn’t align with your long-term goals
- There’s a clear opportunity to step into a stronger, more active deal environment
In these cases, staying put can actually hold you back.
A well-timed move can give you:
- More consistent deal flow
- Better training and development
- Stronger alignment with your long-term path
It Comes Down to Clarity
The decision shouldn’t be based on timing alone.
It should come down to a clear understanding of:
- What you’re getting today
- What you’re missing
- Whether your current firm can realistically close that gap
Being “too junior” usually isn’t the real issue. The real question is whether your current platform is giving you what you need to develop. If it is, there’s value in staying. If it isn’t, the right move (even early) can set you up for long-term success.
