Singapore to London: A Realistic Guide for Lawyers Considering the Move

For Singapore-qualified lawyers, the prospect of relocating to London can feel both exciting and daunting. London is one of the most sophisticated legal markets globally, and while opportunities exist, the path is competitive, selective, and best suited to those with the right international experience. At Sonder Consultants, we’ve helped a number of lawyers make this transition successfully.

What Makes the Move Possible—and for Whom

This move isn’t available to everyone—but for those with the right background, it’s absolutely achievable. The key lies in understanding what London firms are really looking for and positioning your experience accordingly.

How Common Is the Move?

In the last 12 months, around 40 associates have made the move from Singapore to London. That number may not seem huge, but it represents a steady flow of high-quality candidates who’ve met the specific criteria top firms in London are looking for.

These moves are not spread evenly across the market. The majority have come from lawyers who:

  • Completed a training contract at a Magic Circle, US, or leading international firm
  • Have 2–4 years’ PQE
  • Specialise in high-demand practice areas like M&A, funds, banking & finance, or international arbitration

Who’s Hiring from Singapore?

Firms making these hires are usually:

  • Elite US firms in London—recent recruiters of Singapore-based talent—include Kirkland & Ellis, Simpson Thacher, Goodwin Procter, Quinn Emanuel, and Jones Day.
  • UK-based international firms with a global strategy and appetite for lateral hires

They’re looking for associates who can step into busy teams with minimal ramp-up time—meaning your experience must be internationally relevant and technically strong.

Do You Need to Requalify?

If you’ve qualified through a training contract at a recognised firm, you generally won’t need to requalify immediately. Most candidates practise initially as a Registered Foreign Lawyer in England & Wales.

That said, firms do appreciate a willingness to complete the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) over time. It shows commitment to the UK market and helps pave the way for longer-term progression.

What Sets Successful Candidates Apart?

The lawyers who land roles in London from Singapore typically have:

  • A well-documented history of working on cross-border matters
  • A clear specialism that aligns with market demand in London
  • The ability to communicate commercial value in interviews
  • A genuine, well-articulated interest in building a career in the City

“This isn’t a mass movement—but for the lawyers trained and retained at the elite level, with experience gained in key practice areas and with appropriate guidance, it’s of course very achievable indeed. We’re seeing consistent interest from US firms in London for Singapore-qualified associates coming out of top-tier international teams.” — Jonathan Taylor, Director of London at Sonder Consultants
