Rejection or Redirection?

Andrew Scholz

I’m sure we have all been in a situation at some point in our lives where we stopped ourselves from doing something simply because there was a possibility of it not working out for us. Unfortunately, I know I have.

We, as humans, innately hate rejection. It’s just simply in our DNA. Nobody likes being told no unless you’ve trained yourself to understand that it’s part of life. One of my favourite sayings I learned when I started my career is, “you’re always one no closer to a yes.” It might sound silly, but it is a great message. The more you put yourself out there and try for something you want, the closer you are to it coming to fruition, even though there will likely be some speed bumps along the way.

As a lawyer, this is especially true. The path to success in a law career is rarely a straight line. It’s common to face setbacks, including rejection, along the way. However, it’s essential to understand that rejection does not reflect your worth or abilities. In fact, rejection can often be redirection, guiding you towards more significant opportunities and growth.

Rejection takes “training” to get “good” at. But what are the positives of rejection? Wouldn’t it be easier if we only put ourselves in situations that we knew would work out for us? Honestly, it would be a hell of a lot easier. But would it be better for us? No!

Below are 5 things you can do to ensure a positive comes from a negative and rejection serves as a catalyst for personal and professional development:

1. Embrace Resilience

Receiving a rejection can be disheartening, but it’s crucial to maintain a resilient mindset. Remind yourself that setbacks are temporary and that every successful lawyer has faced rejection. Use rejection as an opportunity to develop resilience and strengthen your determination to succeed. Reflect on your experiences, learn from them, and let rejection motivate you to push harder and aim higher.

2. Seek Feedback and Self-Reflection

Rejection often comes with valuable lessons! Take the time to seek feedback from your consultant and interviewer; their constructive criticism can provide valuable insights into areas where you can improve. Engage in self-reflection and identify areas to enhance your skills or expand your legal knowledge. When actively seeking feedback and self-improvement, you can transform rejection into an opportunity for growth.

3. Expand Your Network

Expanding your professional network is one of the most effective ways to overcome rejection. Attend industry conferences, join local bar associations, or participate in legal forums to connect with fellow legal professionals. Engaging with diverse individuals will expose you to new perspectives and opportunities. Building a robust network can lead to referrals, mentorship, and potentially open doors that were previously closed. Remember, the legal community is vast, and you never know who might hold the key to your next successful opportunity.

4. Refine Your Skills

Rejection can serve as a wake-up call to reassess your skill set. Identify areas where you can enhance your legal expertise or acquire new skills that are in demand. Invest time in continuing education courses, professional certifications, or specialized training to sharpen your competitive edge. Demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development showcases your dedication and increases your value as a legal professional.

5. Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Rejection can sometimes take a toll on your confidence and self-esteem. It’s important to maintain a positive mindset throughout the process. Practice self-care, engage in activities that bring you joy, and remind yourself of your past achievements. Remember that one setback does not define your entire legal career, and staying positive will help you bounce back stronger.

At the end of the day, rejection does suck, but it is important. While rejection is inevitable in any lawyer’s journey, it should not be viewed as a roadblock. Instead, it can be seen as a redirection towards a path that aligns more closely with your skills, aspirations, and values. Embracing rejection with resilience, seeking feedback, expanding your network, refining your skills, and cultivating a positive mindset are key ways to overcome rejection and achieve success in the legal field. Remember, the path to success is rarely straightforward, but with perseverance and determination, every rejection can be transformed into a meaningful redirection towards a brighter legal future.
