Legal Recruitment Market Outlook: What Our Recruiters Are Seeing in H1 2026

July 3, 2026

While the data highlights where hiring has taken place across the global legal market, it only tells part of the story. Every day, our specialist legal recruiters speak with partners, hiring managers and lawyers across the U.S., UK, Asia and Australia, providing real-time insight into the trends shaping legal recruitment and law firm hiring.

From increasing demand for specialist associates to longer recruitment processes and changing hiring priorities, these conversations reveal where opportunities are emerging and what both lawyers and law firms should expect during the second half of 2026.

California Legal Recruitment Insights

"The defining story in California this year has been the emergence of a genuine specialist market. The three practice areas generating the most consistent demand have been Intellectual Property Litigation, Investment Funds and Leveraged Finance. All three remain undersupplied relative to hiring demand and continue to be treated as priority mandates by leading firms.
The IP Litigation market has been particularly competitive. AmLaw 100 and 200 firms are targeting the same limited pool of mid-level associates with hard science backgrounds and genuine litigation ownership experience. Lawyers with life sciences and biotechnology expertise are receiving multiple offers, with firms competing through sign-on bonuses and broader compensation packages rather than increasing base salaries beyond the Cravath scale.
Looking ahead, I expect this specialist dynamic to become even more pronounced. For lawyers, the priority should be identifying firms that offer genuine long-term career progression. For firms, attracting the best talent will require more than market-leading compensation. Recruitment processes need to clearly demonstrate the quality of work, culture, career development and long-term opportunities available."

London Legal Recruitment Insights

"The London market began the year with real momentum, particularly across M&A and Private Equity, before geopolitical uncertainty introduced a degree of caution. Despite that, hiring has remained strong across Tax, Structured Finance, Real Estate Finance, Funds, Secondaries and Regulatory Investigations.
U.S. firms continue to recruit actively, but hiring has become far more considered. Rather than filling vacancies quickly, firms are focused on securing the right long-term hire. I expect that trend to continue into the second half of the year, with the strongest opportunities remaining available to exceptional mid-level lawyers."

Director – London

Asia Legal Recruitment Insights

"The Asia market has remained relatively steady throughout the first half of the year. Hiring has continued across Financial Services Regulatory, Funds, Disputes and IPO-related practices, although firms have adopted a much more measured approach. Recruitment processes are noticeably longer, with additional interview stages and increasingly complex approval processes.
We've also seen significant partner movement across the region, particularly in Singapore, creating opportunities for associates as firms build around new leadership teams.
Looking ahead, I expect M&A activity to strengthen as market confidence gradually returns, while Funds hiring should remain particularly active as firms continue investing in private capital capabilities. With several high-profile partner arrivals taking effect this summer, we're anticipating further associate hiring as firms expand those teams. Although approval processes are likely to remain disciplined, the overall outlook is one of cautious optimism as firms position themselves for future growth."

Australia Legal Recruitment Insights

"Demand remains strongest across Corporate, Competition, Finance and Projects, while Australian lawyers returning from London continue to be highly sought after where there is a genuine skills shortage.
Firms are placing much greater emphasis on technical ability, career stability and long-term fit. The opportunities are certainly there, but candidates need to be well prepared and clearly demonstrate why they're the right hire."

New York Legal Recruitment Insights

"One of the biggest shifts I'm seeing is firms hiring for relevant transaction experience rather than simply the name of a lawyer's practice group. The rapid growth of AI infrastructure and data centres is bringing together M&A, Capital Markets, Project Finance, Real Estate, Tax and Regulatory teams in ways we haven't seen before. Lawyers with genuine exposure to these transactions are exceptionally well positioned, regardless of the label on their business card."

H2 2026 Legal Market Outlook

Across every region, one message has remained consistent: opportunities continue to exist for exceptional lawyers. While law firm hiring has become more strategic and selective, firms remain committed to investing in the practice areas and talent that will drive future growth.

For lawyers considering their next move, understanding where hiring demand is strongest has never been more important. Practice area specialisation, quality of experience and market positioning continue to play a significant role in securing opportunities at leading international and U.S. law firms.

For employers, attracting top legal talent requires more than offering competitive compensation. Candidates increasingly assess firms on the quality of work, career progression, culture and long-term development opportunities.

As we move into the second half of 2026, we expect legal recruitment activity to remain strongest across specialist practice areas, private capital, finance, technology, AI-related infrastructure and regulatory work. Firms that continue investing in strategic growth, alongside lawyers who position themselves effectively in the market, will be best placed to capitalise on the opportunities ahead.
