Whilst moving firms can be essential to career development, it's a big decision and sometimes life-changing. Choosing the right firm for you plays a crucial factor in achieving your goals.

We always express to our candidates the importance of asking questions throughout the recruitment process. You must research every important detail about your potential new role. Only then can you make a confident, informed decision and get excited about your future at the firm.

To set you on the path to success, we've outlined key questions you should seek answers to when assessing your next move.

Ask your recruiter:

  • Their knowledge of the firm and specialist areas
  • Who are the partners, and what are they like as people?
  • What's the team culture and working style?
  • What is their interview style?
  • What is their recruitment process?
  • Is there anything to be concerned about?
  • What is the compensation?
  • What is the hours' culture?

Ask the Partners/Team

  • What onboarding training will I receive?
  • What are the long-term prospects for associates?
  • Is there a clear path to partnership?
  • What is the firm's business outlook and growth strategy?
  • What is the team culture like?
  • What is the general office environment like?
  • If I'm working remotely, how does the team stay connected?
  • Would there be a social network and chances to get to know people?
  • How can I make connections and build relationships?
  • What are the working hours around international clients in different time zones?
  • What does a good associate do really well at your firm?
  • If you were giving yourself advice starting out at X firm, what advice would you give?

You also need to get into specifics relating to your practice area. Ask questions about the work, clients and the areas you want to focus on.

We hope this question list proves helpful when looking at your desired firm and deciding on your next move. For more tailored advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
