Overview:

Candidate: Insurance Lawyer (4 PQE)
Locations: Sydney, Australia to London, UK
Result: Secured a role at a prestigious international law firm (with sign-on)

The Candidate

In 2023, Matthew Mayes, our Consultant in Sydney, began working with a mid-level Insurance Lawyer eager to transition to a law firm in London. The market for foreign-qualified lawyers was particularly challenging, with firms primarily sourcing local talent. However with very good experience from a top-tier firm and an excellent academic record, Matthew worked alongside the London team to unearth suitable roles.

The Process

Matthew leveraged his extensive network to connect the candidate with partners at a leading international law firm in London. The candidate’s profile piqued the interest of a partner, and after discussing the advantages of the Youth Mobility Visa—allowing Australians to live and work in the UK for two years without sponsorship—the firm extended an interview invitation.

Notably, the age eligibility for the Youth Mobility Visa is set to extend from 30 to 35 at the end of January 2024, opening doors for more Australian lawyers.

Since the firm was not actively hiring, Matthew ensured that the candidate was prepared for a competitive and potentially lengthier recruitment process.

As anticipated, the interview process took longer than usual due to the need for approvals to create a new role. Meanwhile, the candidate’s current firm offered an internal transfer to London. Shortly after, the London firm offered a 12-month contract, including accommodation assistance to ease the transition.

Initially hesitant about a fixed-term contract, Matthew highlighted its benefits for Australian-qualified lawyers moving to London. Such contracts can provide valuable experience, and after 12 months, the candidate’s profile would be significantly enhanced in the evolving legal market. If she impressed the partners, there would be a strong possibility of retention.

Ultimately, the candidate accepted the offer.

Recruiter Insight

“The move from Australia to London has always been attractive to Australian lawyers. With the extension of the age requirements for the Youth Mobility Visa, I look forward to helping even more lawyers achieve their career aspirations in London.”— Matthew Mayes, Consultant, Sydney
